13 Reasons Why Season 1 Review

13 Reasons Why stars Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, Miles Heizer, Ross Butler, Alisha Boe, Justin Prentice, Devin Druid and Brandon Flynn.

After the suicide of Hannah Baker, Clay receives a number of tapes recorded by Hannah before she killed herself, explaining the events, and the people responsible, that led her to a dark place where she felt that it was her only option.

I don’t normally review TV shows just because there are so many to watch and I watch a lot, but Netflix shows are easier as they all came out at once so I can marathon through them quickly and when they are as good as this show, it is worth talking about.

Positives. This show is very emotional. Because of the strong performances by the cast (particularly the leads Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford), you are brought into this story and straight away you are asking questions and want to know the answers. The characters are great and despite not featuring any major actors they all do a really good job and I believe a lot of the main cast have a big future and we will see them coming through on other projects. The story is very strong and is unique and emotional. The emotion of this story is very high and I think it is a story that needed to be told. Because of events that happen, it can be very tough to watch but it deals with suicide and depression and all the other events very respectfully in the perfect way.  It feels very realistic, scarily so, which is also part of the reason you are drawn in.

Negatives. The only negative, is one I think others would have it, is that it is slightly formulaic, but it works with the story.

It’s an important story that needed to be told and I am glad it’s got the attention it deserves. I highly recommend it, but it can be very difficult to watch.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you are affected by anything on the show, know you are not alone and talk to someone.
